Brokeback Mountain

'Brokeback Mountain' is a film which breaks the mould of conventional love story relationships. Ang Lee the director of the film, attempts to reverse an old and insidious trend in the cinema, and that is to explore the relationship between homosexual males.
The study of homosexuality in cinema in the way that 'Brokeback Mountain' explores to date is pretty much non-existent, that is until Lee decided to uncover this. Films till the release of 'Brokeback Mountain' had continually presented homosexual characters in a completely different light. With gay men often being represented as characters who were inferior, seen as 'the other', even at times monstrous. Films such as Alfred Hitchcock's 'Rope' (1948). 'Brokeback Mountain' explores notions of masculinity in a new light to any other film. The film tells the story of two young, working-men cowboys who fall awkwardly in love. Set in 1963, when Hollywood's homophobia was at it's peak.
