Costume + Narrative

Costume-these three are inter-woven in terms of how costume is used and revealed (A map for analysis of any film)

Narrative:

o Tells a story

o Charts a decline/ incline in character’s journey

o Semiotic value in a film

o Inner-emotional, psychological journey of character

Spectacle:

o Pleasure of looking

o Costume exists in the realm of the visual

o Degree of desire

o Utilizes tools of line, colour, mass, repetition, silhouette, reveal/conceal, texture

Ideology:

o Costume reflects the socio economic factors of the time

o Reflects shifts in social fabrication

o Reflects the role of women in society, racial and democratic shifts

o Consumerism-Films used to sell ideas eg. Racial liberation, national identity etc.

o What does it mean?

Period Films:

o Past is imagined through the present

Binaries of Film-a fabrication by society which needs to express itself in some way:

o Active/ Passive

o Look/ To be looked at

o Brains/ Beauty

o The Illusive
